Daily Field Notes #47

in #geopolis7 years ago

Welcome to the 47th Daily Field Note! Here you find the top post of the day, one covering each scientific field that is included by Geopolis. Since these authors put a lot of effort in writing a good post they surely deserve the extra exposure.

Geopolis is a project to promote and connect authors who write in the fields of global sciences. Upvotes are currently worth more than $1,50 so don't hesitate to get involved or become a member for higher rewards! You can read more about the project and how to join here:

Science quote of the day:
"Science is a way of thinking much more than a body of knowledge." ~Carl Sagan

Geology: Jurassic park would be better named Cretaceous park!

It is indeed weird for Jurassic park to be named after the Jurassic period since most of the creatures appearing on screen are actually from the cretatious period. You might keep this in mind next time you watched the so-manieth remake of the concept.

Geologic time is a concept that is not well understood to the general public. Ask a random person to tell you how old, geologically speaking, the earth is, and the answer ranges from a few thousand to a few million, sometimes some people guess a few billion. According to zircons, a small mineral crystal, the earth is around 4.5 Ga old. Ga stands for giga annum, or a thousand thousand, or billion. These small minerals are very resistant to weathering and the oldest of these found on earth date to about the above mentioned time. The geological time scale is basically a time scale that breaks up the earth's history, as found in rock records. The time scale is broken up into the followin...

Ecology: CONCEPT OF BIODIVERSITY

We all know biodiversity is important for a healthy nature and all, but how exactly is biodiversity defined and what exactly are the consequences of a loss in biodiversity? These are questions that @donaldpete answers in his post.

Original post by @donaldpete

"We do not earn the earth from our ancestors, we borrowed it from our children" The word Biodiversity comes from a contraction of biological diversity. Biodiversity refers to the degree of variation of species or the variety of life i.e different plants, animals and microorganisms, their genes and the ecosystem in its original concept, it relates to the number of different species on an area of a certain size. Biodiversity is often used as a measure of the state/health of biological systems. It varies greatly with ecosystem and climate. The humid tropics have the greater biodiversity and biodiversity decreases towards the north and South as temperature decreases. Biodiversity has evol...

History: History of Medicine: medicine of the extinct archaic cultures. Medicine in Mesopotamia

It is great to see how some ancient cultures had quite advanced medical techniques and habits that often went down together with the society. Here @eleyda78 has a look at some of the medicine practices in extinct archaic cultures.

Original post by @eleyda78

Today I continue with this series of posts that I have dedicated to the history of medicine ), continuing with the study of "archaic cultures". We call "archaic cultures" those that departed from the superior forms of primitive culture and that initiated history, that is, they initiated the stage that we can reconstruct through written documents.
