Daily Field Notes #22

in #geopolis7 years ago (edited)

Welcome to the 22nd Daily Field Note! Here you find the top post of the day, one covering each scientific field that is included by Geopolis. Since these authors put a lot of effort in writing a good post they surely deserve the extra exposure.

Geopolis is a project to promote and connect authors who write in the fields of global sciences. Upvotes are currently worth more than $1,50 so don't hesitate to get involved or become a member for higher rewards! You can read more about the project and how to join here:

Subjects curated by Geopolis are Geography, Anthropology, Ecology, Geology, Archeology and certain branches of History.

History: The First Magellan Probe.

Since the first satellite launched about 60 years ago, artificial moons start to become part of our history. The Magellan probe is one of them and carries, as most satellites, a specific name. For a well written background of this probe and on the origins of its name, you should read gmaktub's post about it.

Original Post

The Magellan probe, launched from the space shuttle Atlantis, operated between 1989 and 1994, orbiting the planet Venus. The probe was able to collect 980 images of the planet before the mission concluded. The Magellan probe did not get its name by accident. It was named for one of the greatest explorers in history Ferdinand Magellan. Born in Portugal in the late fifteenth century, Magellan became convinced that a ship could sail around the world. In those days some people still did not believe the Earth was round, and they were convinced that any ship that sailed far enough...

Geology: A Superior Variety of Agate

This stone really fits into the category of peculiar... The colors are magnificent and the formation is also quite interesting! It surely is nice to read if you are into the geology behind these gemstones. thanks to @gra for writing this article.

Original Post

In the areas surrounding the western-most Great Lake in North America, there is a prized gemstone that is sought after by both novice and veteran rock hounds. It is unique in brilliance and complexity, with structures so fine that the naked eye cannot distinguish the extent of the detail.

The appeal of this beautiful rock is accompanied by a distinct difficulty in locating it, and people are seldom willing to give away their 'secret' hunting spots. In future posts we will consider how spatial data and GIS might be used to procure prime picking points. However, in order to understand where these gems can be found, we must first know how they originate. In case you have not guessed already, today we are talking about Lake Superior Agates.

archeology: Somebody was making tools in India up to almost 400 000 years ago! But who?!

Could it be that the human evolutionary tree has to be rewritten? Well, it is not that drastic, but some new findings in India shed more light on the matter. You can read @scisteem's interpretation on the article in 'nature' to know more about it.

Original Post

Findings from Central India show that somebody was making stone tools typical of modern humans. But those should have come that much much later. In the last issue of the Nature magazine, an interesting article popped out. It was about stone tools found in the area known as Attirampakkam. About seven thousand stone tools that beautifully documented to switch from the simplest tools to more advanced flint tools. And thus it also nicely described how the less evolved humans have been replaced by modern Homo sapiens. When this should have happened isn’t completely clear. Some ...

geography: Hurricanes: The why of its existence.

Hurricanes can cause some serious damage and should be taken very seriously. It is also a common weather phenomenon so understanding what causes it might be interesting for you all to know! @jlmol7 did a good job on explaining the basics of this natural force.

Original Post

Hi guys, today I want to talk a little about this atmospheric phenomenon that affects tropical and subtropical countries. Hurricanes as we all know are part of the natural threats that exist on our planet and for that reason it is necessary to know a little more about them. To begin with, these phenomena cause enormous damage every year and it seems that they are getting worse. Why are there hurricanes? ... Every wind is caused by a pressure difference in the air that is at higher pressure, always moving towards where there is less pressure.

What causes a volume of air to lower its pressure? Mainly the heat: when the air heats up, its molecules separate, which makes it less dense ...
