Times have changed, and very recently too.

Yeah this is one of those hard generational things. There was a lot of casual homophobia growing up in the 90s and 00s. We can easily forget how recent a lot of these developments were. I always like to remind people that interracial marriage didn't have majority support till the mid 90s. Something that generally has broad, relatively unquestioned support now.

Even with women's rights, a lot of major advances are relatively recent. Women were only able to get credit cards and mortgages on their own since 1974. They only got the right to get business loans without a male relative co-signer since 1988. These are very much the recent past.
