The cherries are ON!!!! Food forest tour VLOG 9
Greetings fellow Steemians!!!! Click above....for the latest... FULL VIDEO TOUR!!! The wave of cherries....has begun! This week...our son...River... joins me for another quick tour around the food forest. In this tour...we show you some of the developing fruits...like the figs...and work our way....around the whole food forest and end in the greenhouse. The cherries are ripening in waves right now...and the pluots, pluerries, plums...almonds....and peaches.. aren't far behind. We are growing a few different varieties of cherry...to assist each other in pollination. Currently..we are growing..Bing, Ranier, Van and Stella. mmmmmmmm!
We have many cherries growing...but there's an abundance of other fruit in this food forest. Asian pears, mulberries, apples, persmimmon, pluot, pluerry, plum, almonds, nectarine, peach, nectaplum....aprium...and many others! It's a full circle pathway...that leads ALL...the way around the house...so we can harvest as we walk.
Figs rise up...all around the greenhouse. We have black mission, katoda, black jack...and brown turkey currently residing here.
Each walkway...is a swale...that allows water to permeate and infiltrate deeply...and hold water for longer periods of time. Each section of this food forest is terraced...to allow deeper penetration.
As you walk away from the greenhouse and figs... toward the backyard...you enter a grove of apples. The apples are still a ways off from ripeness.....but the trees in the mean time offer us wonderful shade in this part of the forest.
Inside the geodesic greenhouse right now....we have many tropicals growing. We keep the pathways moistened and the wood mulch also. The added shade cloth on top of the greenhouse...and 1000 gallon fish pond inside the dome...keeps the climate very tropical. Transpiration from vine crops...like muskemelons will soon be assisting create this micro climate. Tobacco, nasturtium, lemongrass, aloe vera, shizandra, ginger, turmeric, melons, bamboo, papaya...white sapote...and many others tropicals and sub tropicals....hanging out in here together!
Here is a new cherimoya tree planted near the pond. She will create a beautiful canopy of shade over this pond! We have 3 other cherimoyas as well. Hand pollination in our future! :) Ginger and turmeric are coming up along the whole perimeter of the pond.
Here come the muskmelons on the east side of the growing dome. They will provide some nice shade...and transpiration.

Damn this is inspiring! I live in Taos, NM..and we got lucky this year with NO late frost, which is rare around here. So looking forward to seeing what all kinds of fruits we are going to get around the property I'm stewarding (I'm a small scale farmer). I noticed you mentioned you have a 1000 gallon fish tank in your greenhouse. I also have about 1200 gallons of water I want to add a few fish to. Right now I'm just aerating the tanks and using one for worm / equisetum tea. What kind of fish do you think would be simple to get started with? Thanks for the good read...
hi @nickhans!!!! thanks for taking the time....to leave such a deliberate comment my friend!!! your spot sounds amazing!!!!! as far as fish....i've found that simple gold fish work very well. they can take the temperature fluxes....better than most. these particular gold fish have been in this pond....for over ten years now. no filter..and no aeration...other than my hand scooping water out. the same colony of fish is STILL IN THERE LOL!!!! i don't feed the pond either. they eat algae..and insects.
i do about a 15 percent water change....weekly....because i'm constantly using the water to feed my trees...and then top off the tank with tap water.
Wow you rally make maximum use of your space! You have privacy from your neighbors. What a paradise! Your little girl is so joyous! What a cool way to grow up. I love Utah by the way. Such a beautiful and interesting place. My parents just moved from SLC to Charleston.

Appreciate all the great OM you got going on ( a little jealous of the quantity of woodchips you got going on). and such gorgeous plants. I'm definitely going to have to acquire some of the prunus hyrbirds. All the sub-tropicals and tropical, WOW. White sapote, cherimoya, ginger, was that wachuma (aka san pedro) cactus?... Heck YES!!!!
