The Canals: Protecting Young plants from Bunnies & Frost!

Spending weeks starting plants early indoors only to have the bunnies feast on them or a light frost wither them away is just not an option on the homestead. It seems like seedlings are so fragile in the beginning, so we've come up with a way to give them a little boost in the beginning. It works expecially well if your using the back to eden gardening method.

Get ready to load up those wheel barrels. Lots and Lots of mulch.. Im sure hay bales, leaves, or other materials could be substituted for mulch, use what ya got! Make a row where you'd like to plant your seedlings.

Now part the red sea! Split the mulch in half, and make a big "canal" in the middle-about a foot wide.

Get planting! Plant all your seedlings in the canal. We fit two rows comfortably.

Now for the fun part. We used polycarbonate, Im sure plenty of other things could be used- get creative! We actually got a bunch of it free from someone getting rid of their greenhouse, so check your local craigslist. Anyways, Find the center and fold them in half.
Your almost done. Now make little roofs on the canal. To keep roofs in place, make divits in the mulch for the edges. These roofs will not only keep your plants in a nice, humid cozy envirement to get growing in they also let the bunnies see all your beautiful plants grow without being able to munch on them.
Once you've got them all lined up and even put mulch on all the edges. This will keep it in place.We've had a few bad storms already & everything stayed perfect.
