I feed hundreds of people & that brings me happiness
When Opportunity Knocks, Open the Door!
Making people happy makes me happy
I heard opportunity knocking and I answered the door. People told me I should grow tomatoes and sell them because they would buy them and others might as well. I didn't hesitate. I already had a business setup and researched all winter season. Now, jump to August and I've delivered well over my record last year. I sell them, but I still give many away because love to make people happy. And believe me, there are tons of happy people around enjoying my heirloom tomatoes.
The little things
I don't belong to any church or organization, but I am taking a large portion of my tomatoes and donating them to places that provide meals for the community. Not everyone has the privilege of having access to fresh, healthy food - so I try to change that in small, meaningful ways.
My Customers Like Variety & That's What They Get!
I grow a nice selection of heirloom tomatoes, if you want to know what varieties I grow, just look below!
Abe Lincoln | Atkinson | Black Krim |
---|---|---|
Box Car Willie | Brandywine | Calypso |
Caribe | Cherokee Purple | Creole |
Delicious | Floradade | Homestead |
Marion | Money Maker | Mortgage Lifter |
Pineapple | Purple Tomatillo | Royal Hillbilly |
Black Vernissage | Hungarian Heart | Super Sweet Cherry 100 (hybrid) |
And plenty of seed that I won't even mention, just what I'm growin' this year.

Well I felt pretty good to upvote this post. Congrats on growing so much that you can share your abundance with people who needs it. good karma for you and your family for generations to come.
Thanks, @vachemorte! It is a rewarding experience and one that I hope to encourage more people to do for themselves. When we do what we are passionate about it shows in the results and my results feed people that appreciate it. That appreciation is greater than any monetary reward. It is a truly fulfilling experience to do what you love AND be appreciated for it. Money is just the byproduct 😉. Thank you for your kind words and support! 🔥🚀 STEEM ON!!
I'd love to get some genuine non-GMO organic corn on the cob. My children love to eat it, but I have had a hard time finding where to get it (the good stuff).
I'd barter or buy corn, peppers, onions, tomatoes, etc. I'm sure @elyce would love some eggplant too! The possibilities are endless.
Selling your main stocks and giving to local charity initiatives is a great idea. People will love you even more for it!
Non-gmo corn is very hard to find. Most corn is now hybridized in some way. It can pollinate from 400+ yards so, even non-GMO corn still might be GMO corn..haha
I grew eggplant last year, but none of us eat it. It also attracts pests that I do not have to combat this year. My neighbors grow all kinds of stuff, too. I give them plants and produce and they bring me veggies I don't grow and sauce, salsa, and all kinds of goodies. It's awesome!! We do not need to spend a dime to advertise @finnian. The plant sale we did this year - was a to benefit The Women's Auxilary at Springfield Hospital. We asked if we could be a vendor and help raise money for them. We gave them a (nice) portion of the proceeds so they were very happy to have us and we're certainly welcome next year 😉. That's the beauty of doing for your community - the community supports you without hesitation. A lady at the plant sale had a slow day and did not meet her break-even point, so I bought the rest of her annuals. She sold them to me at cost and I figured 'why not!' since we had a pretty good day & I knew I could sell the flowers without any problems. I did just that - sold them and made a couple dollars. Even ended with a few free plants for my house. We have had no trouble at all selling our tomatoes this year. We actually have been doing a pop-up stand at a Gold's Gym every weekend thanks to the owner allowing us to set there after classes let out. People come out of the gym after a workout and see fresh, organic, locally grown produce! The owner enjoys his courtesy heirloom tomatoes, of course!! People want to see us..lol We have one lady that carries a salt and pepper shaker in her purse in case she sees us. 😆
Thanks again @thing-2 for the robo-love 👍🏼👍🏼. Your parameters are superb! 🤖❤️
These are high quality farm products you have here. It must require alot of financial resources to put into. I Hope finance is not a challenge for you? Great article by the way.
Thanks @yaanivapeji, it actually doesn't cost much to start, the land is the expensive part. If you do it the right way, the land pays for itself over time. In a while that has inflated the value of everything, finances are a challenge for most, but we all just do the best we can with what we have. 😋 Lots of ways to make money, so stay tuned because I'm going to keep sharing lots of ways to do it. It takes skill to grow your own food and I want more people to have that ability - everyone eats.
Very true.😀😀😀
That is quite the variety of tomatoes you sell. If I may ask what is your best selling variety? Do people prefer the large meaty ones like the mortgage lifter or the smaller varieties like brandywine .
Thanks @sufficientliving, I find the large beefsteak varieties sell best here. My brandywine's are a pound and up, so they sell very well. The Box Car Willie has been a huge success as well - people bid war over them..lol it's serious. The Mortgage Lifters did not impress me, but will try an alternative seed source next year. In this area the large and small varieties sell well, but the medium sized tomatoes 8-12oz don't seem interesting enough. The gnarliest, ugliest ones sell - some people that buy from us swear the odd ones have the best taste!
I also recommend selling Cherry Tomatoes - they are typically sold by the pint, not lb. and they tend to run $3-5 /pint (at least where I live). They are typically prolific producers and a good way to earn some extra money. We had one cherry tomato plant last year that made more than we could ever eat (family of 4). Easy money making opportunity and worst case you'll make tons of happy neighbors 😎🔥🚀
