A middle-of-the-road fluorescent light is very affordable and does not use very much electricity than its predecessor. A T8 Fluorescent light fixture will be enough to start multiple seed starting trays and it will cost you less than $1 a month to run.
#3 - Organic Grow Medium
I always use organic seed starting mix myself, it's just my personal choice. There is many organic and non organic options out there. Choose whatever suits you and your budget. Many seed starting mixes will have enough nutrients in it to get your seed through sprouting and being a seedling.

as an alternative to the plastic tray, you can use egg cartons. they are cheaper and you can plant the vegetables directly outside after the last frost, without removing the carton.
I have a grow tent with a grow light in it for the winter months and it has been one of the best investments to date.
I have two tomato plants inside the tent, as well as a variety of herbs, and the plants have six tomatoes right now. None have started to ripen and change color as i have to adjust the humidity inside the tent, but you will love the grow light.
That is awesome! I have not heard much about people growing tomatoes indoors but I have wondered about this myself.
