Creating An All White Flower Garden
A white flower garden, or moon garden as they are sometimes referred to, can be an excellent way to showcase your green thumb. The beauty of a white flower garden, is that it can be just as beautiful in the evening as in the daytime. Add to your garden some blue and silver blooms to go alongside the white, and you ve got a spectacular moonlight vision.
The Setting
Before you set up your white flower garden, youll need to plot out how you want it to be set up. There are two ways to format a white flower garden, formally and informally. An informal moon garden is quite lovely, as the many white blossoms are simply scattered thickly together, with no seeming rhyme or reason. Roses mixed with gardenias, babys breath alongside carnations, and so forth. The end result is one that leaves you with a feeling of wild fields and English countrysides.
A formal white flower garden is exactly what it sounds like. White flowers are arranged by type, and sorted by height, bloom size, and type (shrub, annual, perennial). Formal white flower gardens are usually bordered by well clipped, low lying hedges. when the flowers are in bloom, the effect can be as stunning as a checkerboard at midnight.
Creating A Background
The most beautiful background for a white flower garden is dark green foliage spread throughout. The darker background is especially flattering when the moonlight hits your white and silver blooms. There are a number of darker green ferns that go quite nicely in a white garden, but our favourite effect has always been a border of dark green boxwood shrubs. The waxy leaves of this hearty shrub last year round with proper care in most climates. Keep boxwoods trimmed in a low cut hedge around the border of your white flower garden, and the moonlight will be reflected back on your blooms. This is especially nice if you have mixed silver blooms in with the white.
Box It In
The final step in planning your white flower garden is to choose a landscaping border to enclose it. Our personal favorite enclosure for a white garden is a low lying, white border. This is created by painting landscaping bricks with a white, outdoor paint before placing them around the edge of your garden. Usually a layer of about three bricks high is perfect for these beautiful gardens.
Whichever flowers you choose, whether you plan to enjoy your blooms during the day or in the silvery moonlight, theres no denying that a white flower garden is a thing of beauty. Properly cared for, your white flower garden will provide you and your loved ones with many years of viewing pleasure.
It is a much easier way for those with disabilities to enjoy the gardening hobby.
