Updates on growing Sweet Potato slips

in #garden5 years ago (edited)

It's been a good 7-10 days since I started my slips. You take small spuds or cut up big ones. Stick tooth picks in them and soak half of the spud in water. Doing this forms roots and leaves on top. Over time the leaves grow and you can trim them when they get three to six inches. Placing them in water to form their own roots, then its ready to be placed in the ground.

I cut the slip off the spud above. It was ready with vines growing over 5 inches.

Loving seeing the Sweet Potato leaves growing on the spuds. They seem to be happy with a spot by the window.

Was quite surprised with how many roots formed. Something I noticed was the small spuds I did not cut up, which happened to be spuds I grew last year seemed to form more slips than the store bought spuds.

I see more little leaves emerging from the Sweet Potatoes. And hoping the ones I trimmed will grow more leaves and I can repeat the process. I check on them every two days and swap out their water. Maybe next visit I'll have some more slips to cut off and start in water.
