Golden Oregano! A Great Addition To Your Garden!

in #garden7 years ago

One of my more favorite herbs in my garden is golden oregano. Above is a video I made over two weeks ago from the time of this post. That was my first harvest. Yesterday I did another decent size harvest and the golden oregano was even thicker than the fist harvest.

The photo below is from last year and I can hardly wait until my beans, nasturtiums, borage, and calendula around it begin to blossom and add even more color like is shown here, though the oregano has already spread out farther this year than is shown here:

The funny thing about this herb is that it was accidental I ended up with it. I had been doing some shopping at our local nursery and saw they had a sad looking "stevia" start that they sold to me for half price. I took it home, set it in my green house and nurtured it back to health. However, I could not understand that even though it looked healthier each day, the color was getting progressively lighter and brighter rather than the darker green stevia should have. I finally took a taste and knew it was not stevia but was clueless as to what it was and did not want to throw it out.

It was not long before I had to move it into a much larger pot outside and it quidkly took over that pot. I was enamored with the bright green color and the way it draped over the pot, it was so lovely!

So the next year when I began to put in my garden, I looked at that unknown plant as it was starting to come back again after being dormant for the winter and realized I had better decide what to do with it because I have such limited space, I need to reserve every inch for things that are not just beautiful but also useful as food or medicine. I took some time studying the plant, the aroma, the taste, and something about it was very familiar to me. At this point I glanced over to where one of my Mediterranean oregano plants was and I realized that was it, it just had to be some variety of oregano. I went to work on the internet looking up varieties and it did not take me long finding out exactly what it was and I was thrilled.

Golden oregano is a plant many gardeners grow for its appearance alone yet it is a wonderful culinary herb as well and I LOVE it fresh in salads, added to stir fries, or used dried in my sauces, soups, gravies and more. Though the flavor is similar to your darker green oregano, it is much sweeter and lighter, not at all hot, and the aroma is amazing. Another great plus is the beauty the pop of vibrant color it adds to the garden in a carpet of lime green.

Here is yesterday's harvest, I believe I may already have enough dried herb now to last me the rest of the year, but I shall continue to harvest and dry, hoping to get enough for two years:

If you are into gardening, be it for food or for beauty, I highly recommend this herb!

Hope you enjoyed this post and that you will follow me here, thank you for your time!
