Garden Time

I’ve always wanted to have a garden in my yard and this weekend I put that goal into action. The local greenhouse was packed with excited people who were looking to get a little dirty. There was a buzz in the air and the sun was blazing. I decided to take a few pictures inside the greenhouse as well as the garden to help document this occasion.

First I’ll start with some pictures at the greenhouse. These are the plants and colors that caught my eye, that I thought would be worthy of sharing.

Then came the hard work of putting in the garden.

I used only materials around the house to create the bed and the only thing we purchased was the soil and plants.

I first created a base with bricks that we had laying around in our backyard from the previous owner. I then used extra patio blocks that we had to make the walls of the garden. Once I had the walls up, I secured them with more brick on the outside edge as well as dirt on top of the bricks. Rather than buy lining for the bottom, I recycled some cardboard boxes that we had to act as liner. After all of that I put some chicken wire around it to keep my dog from peeing on the plants.

The garden isn’t very big but I feel like it’s a great start to a hobby I want to dive deeper into. Below is a picture of our finished product with my dog guarding the soon to be veggies. We have 8 tomato plants, 3 cucumber and 2 Thai chili plants.

We chose tomato and cucumber plants because they are supposedly easier types of plants to grow and we picked the peppers because we love hot food and thought it would be fun to try those out. There were several different options for types of tomato, cucumber and peppers and we wanted to pick kinds that would be the easiest for amateurs to grow. Our choices were based on how long it takes to produce food. All the food we chose takes between 60 and 80 days to mature. That means it’s less time that we have to worry about keeping them alive and it won’t run into the super hot weather we tend to get in August.

Almost forgot to mention the awesome azalea we got for the front of our home. Here is a picture of that.
