Gaming On The Blockchain: The LeaderboardssteemCreated with Sketch.

The upsides to gaming on the blockchain are immense. You will find various articles about players being able to own their items and having an in-game economy where players can actually trade their coins for real money. But there is one aspect that doesn't come up that often which is the leaderboards. This is an aspect that is in almost every online game. It gives the players something to strive for when competing and a way for non-esports athletes a way to see where their skills measure up. But the problem is they are far from perfect. Sometimes they get hacked and the people at the top have some ridiculous scores or they are not set up in a way that is continually challenging and rewarding for new players.

This is where the blockchain comes in. If you set up ranked matches on a blockchain you can verify who the winner is without a third party. There will be less cheating and you can make a ranked system where those on top are actually the best in the world. This can then help new players enter into esports tournaments that they might not have qualified for before.

And then you have the rewards. You are the top 10 player for a season? Here are some coins that you can sell. Here is some rare item on the blockchain. This type of rank match would incentive players and as long as they don't get dominated by a select few, you can get a lot of people who want to game at a semi-pro level without going to actual tournaments.

What do you think of the leaderboard blockchain option?

This would be awesome as not needing a third party would be more efficient and enable tournaments to run smoother.

Exactly. You could have them run online and not just for pros.

i think that would be awesome, it's basically a motive and a prize for those that wanna make something of gaming or dedicate themselves to that! also an open world game with a real time economy based on a crypto would be awesome

Funny you should mention that. I've been slowly exploring the idea of moving away from my OpenSeed api to the blockchain. One of its main features was a "universal leader board" which could be tied into all sorts of gaming interfaces. I started calling the idea "decentralized Steam" and I'm hoping to have something to present later this year (assuming I can work out all the needed features)

All that to say, yeah I think using the block chain is a swell idea for gaming.

Good luck with the project :)

I think it's a fine idea.

I an a game lover guy. I regularly play traditional online games. I also aware of that kind of problems you mentioned in this article. I hope blockchain will solve those kinds of problems. I can't wait to play blockchain based games.
