Has anyone every wondered why MMOs aren't like what they used to be?

Star Wars Galaxies was one of the best mmorpgs of all time. Still to this day there is an emulator of it running 24/7. Similarly, both the original Everquest and Everquest 2 are still up and running. Recently I've found myself hating on WoW just because it seems more like a theme park mmo rather than an open world rpg with surprises and secrets everywhere.
