Super Mario Odyssey Review - Wanderlust with Mario

Mario goes on tour and takes along: his iconic cap. Of course, the red cap with a recognizable 'M' can not be missed in a new adventure, but not yet before, the headgear played such a big role. After a very rave intro - in which Peach is taken by Bowser for a forced wedding - Mario gets friends with Cappy. This figure fits well on Mario's head and he also has a special gift.

Everything that Cappy lands on can take over Mario. An unsuspecting Goomba gets the heavenly eyes and thick mustache of Mario and is then controlled. Just as easily, electricity cables, dinosaurs, tanks, people, flower bulbs and many other things can be taken over and controlled. It is advisable to guess, but it involves very many fun, original and creative possibilities.

Throw it with the cap!

If Mario has a Bullet Bill he can fly fast, as Cheep-Cheep he can swim well and, as a pit cover, he can open the road to the sewage. No, not every acquisition is equally useful, but the gameplay options are endless and Super Mario Odyssey knows to be surprised at all.

The ultimate goal of the game is to save Peach from Bowser's claws, and you may have a sweet start at maybe an hour or seven. The real work begins traditionally for a modern Mario platformer, on the other hand, after the main story has ended. Only then will all the challenges, bonus worlds and hidden locations open, which will increase the difficulty level.

Mission for the Moon

Where it's all about Odyssey, its manners. These colorful heavenly bodies with eyes are the fuel of Mario's flying vehicle: the Odyssey. Deliver them and the ship can fly to further and exotic places.

No life
Are you hit three times in a row or does Mario fall into a bottomless pit? Instead of life, you will lose valuable gold coins in Super Mario Odyssey. It's happening every ten times, and with some luck you can pick them up again in your second attempt. Grab that opportunity, because coins are hardly needed to buy all the available costumes.
The males themselves have hidden in the worlds in every possible place. A suspicious lantern pole, a race against a fast-paced Koopa and a final boss to be defeated, all hide such a precious moon.

There are hundreds of dollars to do without dolls and in the first few hours you almost stumble upon the amount of man you encounter in every level. If you want to see what is waiting for him at the end of Mario's journey then you need five hundred and even after that there is enough to gather and do. It also means that the game knows how to challenge and amaze at endlessly creative ways. For some men, you need to pull out proper platform capsules while turning back to helping a random character in the world.

Dazzling Variety

Wherever Bowser and his naughty followers have been, Mario has to help the local people out of the fire. In this way, he travels to frozen deserts, colorful kitchens, realistic-looking metropolis and lost worlds. The variety in locations is excellent and there is actually no miss between. That makes it so nice to return to these places again. In addition to the manners - where there are always dozens of gods in every kingdom - every world has its own currency.

The purple coins of a specific place can be redeemed in special shops for souvenirs and stickers for the Odyssey. Every location also has an appropriate outfit for Mario for sale. The eye for detail is also nothing less than genius in these garments. A little Nintendo historian in Mario's wardrobe undoubtedly recognizes a pair of hats and packages from previous plumbing adventures. It is therefore a pity that these outfits do not really affect the gameplay.

Weird Mario in Weirdo World

Still, it's fun to hoist Mario in every world in a new package, and that actually speaks volumes about how Odyssey feels like a little feast. Mario, for example, runs almost perfectly with an arsenal of jumps that you say to you. The presence of Cappy gives a further turn. By throwing him forward and turning in place, Mario can use him as a step. His new cap is also able to flip enemies, which ultimately gives you more freedom of movement than ever before.

Due to the largely familiar running and jumping game and simple missions, Odyssey is also willing to go further and get mad than his predecessors.

Co-op Cappy
A real multiplayer is not to mention, but a second player can participate at any time and assume Cappy's role. As this hat you can protect Mario and capture items and characters that can take over the hero for him. It's not very complex, but it's a nasty addition to which Odyssey is more than a single trip.
Let no doubt: in many ways this is the most weird, humorous and self-conscious Mario ever. References to previous parts include 2D sections complete with NES graphics and jazzy remixes of original tunes, but Odyssey is not afraid to get obscure pieces. Really strange is the collision of styles that occur in virtually every world. Mario in New Donk City seeks to walk between people who are realistic in proportions remains strange, but Odyssey knows in some way to work.

By constantly throwing another new creative challenge on Mario, Odyssey never loses its momentum. Nevertheless, all this beautiful is finally an end, and perhaps the biggest problem of Super Mario Odyssey is that. Not yet before, a gathering was something to become so terribly happy.

Super Mario Odyssey will be available for the Nintendo Switch from October 27th.

Conclusion

There is no other game this autumn, where the fun is as clear as it was at Super Mario Odyssey. Mario is not invented again, but the amount of creativity and happiness in this game actually makes all of it forget. Super Mario Odyssey is a party, it's fantastic and it's almost sinful that after reaching hundreds of men in the most versatile and colorful worlds there will be an end to it.

Pros

➕ New ideas around every corner
➕ Collective rage
➕ Crack of fun

Cons

➖ Costumes do not affect gameplay

Thanks for your precious time.

Great review. I have been playing the game for a day or so and am having loads of fun. Especially like the 2D portions that give an old school touch to the game.
