Welcome to F1 2016 The Ultimate Game Review!

Hello Steemers and Welcome to my new series: The Ultimate Game Review!
In this Series, I share the very best reviews from our friends in the comment section of Steam. These Reviews left by myself and thousands of other users on the Steam Platform. Every Review is Credited to the Original Poster by their steam name from the Steam Gaming App. None or these reviews are taken from professional writers on blog sites, websites or articles. These are all just people like you and me and their thoughts after trying a game.

The reason I decided to do this was because most Gaming Reviews always seem so one sided, perhaps the Author has an agenda, perhaps they are predjeduce or a bigot. Who knows. With this series, I feel like Gamers, like you and I will get the absolute best experience possible when trying to determine whether the game is for you or not. The reason being, we will get to see the thoughts of not just 1 but many "Average Joes" like you and I and their thoughts after playing a game.

So please, sit back and Enjoy this Ultimate Game Review that I've compiled together for you!

The 970

By Stiggybutty

It's already better than F1 2015 in every way. I put over 50 hours into F1 2015.

First off, the game was is more optismised than than last year's title. On my 970, I'm getting over 100 fps on high settings in both dry and wet conditions. Wet conditions on the previous game would always have severe drops to 30-40 when driving near a few other cars. The last game also had micro stutters occasionly. I have yet to get any in this game.

The actual driving is largely the same. I've noticed the rear tyres don't spin up as much which I always thought was a bit extreme in F1 2015. It's still more arcadey than sim but honestly I'm fine with that. The addition of steam workshop support for car setups is a nice feature.

It's got a proper career mode! And the best in the series to date! I love the addition of the track acclimatisation, tyre management and qualifying simulation programs in the practice sessions. It's a great way of prepping for the race and improving your car during the season by earning R&D points. I started my career in Manor with the aim of bringing the team closer to the front of the grid.

I've seen a few bugs, such as a UI graphic that stayed on screen for an entire race and a floating ghost driver during a single-shot qualifying session. No crashes thus far. The multiplayer isn't broken at launch like the last game.

I just want to play more!

A Quick Look

If you are reading this and you are like me and have been sadly very disappointed by the recent F1 games here is what you need to know.

9/10 - Season & Career single player modes are both in-depth & immersive.
7/10 - AI has been greatly improved, It's still not human but it's the closest it has ever been. (keep an eye out for AI in the wet, they drive like they are in the dry)
8/10 - Visually the game is stunning even at 4K or 21:9 & wider. (still clearly bound by console fidelity)
9/10 - Engine Sound, yes its the turbo era, But Codemasters have nailed the sound even down the finest of engine/turbo details. They really did some work here.
8/10 - Atmosphere sound is rich and immersive with great menu music & some of the best commentary the franchise has ever featured. (Sadly no Martin Brundle or Ted Kravitz)
8/10 - Racing Wheel & Pedal FFB & feeling is great. It's not Assetto Corsa but even a finely tuned Fanatec wheel owner can still enjoy some of the detailed rear wheel slip or kerb feeling.
7/10 - Car Handling and Physics are improved. Again this isn't Assetto Corsa or iRacing level. Dry racing is still on rails, wet weather feel has seen some improvements and feel more challenging & rewarding when perfected.
8/10 - Track design has finally been updated to better represent the real life counter-parts. Some tracks had previously not seen layout updates they where first implemented in F1 2010. Melbourne T10 to T11 no longer has grass against the wall. FINALLY!!!!!!
9/10 - Voice Command, This feature seems trivial. But it simply works, see the list of valid commands below and make sure you speak with a clear tone of voice into your mic. "Leave Me Alone" & "Shut Up Jeff" are genuinely valid responses just FYI. LOL!!!

Overall this franchise has finally seen some love & revitalization it badly needed. While I understand the difficulties of a yearly cycle, this looks like a game they spent 2 years making not 12 months.

The Best

Easily the best entry in the Formula 1 game franchise by Codemasters. Pretty much everything about this game is perfectly crafted. From the actual SkySports commentary for pre and post session cutscenes, to the implementation of the 2016 tire rules. The career mode is like nothing I've seen in a very long time in the all the best ways. It's somewhat reminiscent of the career modes that EA crafted in the peak of their NASCAR liscense days. NASCAR Thunder 2004 had hands-down my favorite career mode in any racing game, but F1 2016 is giving it a run for it's money.

I have only a few minor complaints, and it's all mostly cosmetic. The two biggest is simply that there are no female avatars to choose from in career mode, and that there are no interviews like there were in F1 2010. Otherwise, I miss the loading screens like they had in F1 2013 and 14 (though since it loads in the background during menus it's really not a big deal), and the fact that it's kinda poorly optimized. This is the first game I've encountered that my PC doesn't meet at least the minimum specs for, but on the default settings I do usually get around 60fps anyway. The paddock scenes actually kill my FPS the most. The physics model is a little bit tricky to get a hold of, but once I had the proper wheel settings and got some practice on the track it felt pretty natural and somewhat similar to the 2015 McLaren in iRacing and the 2015 Ferrari in Assetto Corsa.

If you are a fan of racing games, Formula 1, or perhaps even sim games in general I think this title is worth a serious consideration.

tl;dr

Pros:
Career mode rocks
The AI are challenging, and will actually attempt to pass you
The presentation is great
Voice commands work really well

Cons:
No female avatars (F1 Championship Edition did this 10 years ago)
No interviews in career mode like 2010
Kinda poorly optimized (Still getting around 60fps tho)

It's Good

Finally another F1 game that's worth its price! I must admit that Codemasters did a really good job on this one.
F1 2016 is - as the name reveals - licensed for the current season with all your favorite Formula One drivers from Hamilton over Grosjean to Haryanto. The graphics look almost lifelike and the different tracks feel like the real thing.

Positive:

  • safety car and virtual safety car included
  • stands and pit lane feel alive with an audience and the crews present
  • pit garage is beautifully animated
  • cars feel balanced
  • training programmes during free practice provide motivation for collecting development points which you can invest for upgrades to your car over the season
  • career mode is lots of fun
  • animations before practice/qualifying/race add to the feeling of being a part of F1, as does the possibility to do a formation lap before race start
  • weather changes are quite challenging
  • very good damage models and collision simulation

Negative:

  • even with a very good graphic card that can handle the settings on ultra, the game still sometimes loads stuff in the background and becomes rather bumpy, which sucks especially while driving through corners
  • AI behaves rather erratically at times
  • keyboard users are at a disadvantage at the tire wear training programme. The handling is too harsh if you don't use a controller or steering wheel

I haven't tested the online multiplayer yet, so I can't say anything about it.
All in all this is the best F1 game I've played since F1 Racing Championship. I can definitely recommend it to all racing fans out there.

Final Verdict:

85/100

This Thrilling Racing game is the absolute best F1 game available. Get your hands on it if you're a fan of driving games!
