Rocket League Review On Nintendo Switch
Rocket League first launched back in July of 2015 and has since been updated quite frequently fine tuning the game, adding new modes and plenty of cosmetics over the years and don't forget all the various ports to different platforms but what is Rocket League like in 2017 , more importantly what is it like on the newest port the Nintendo Switch?
What is Rocket League and why is it still so popular even today?
Rocket League remains at its core, the same game as it was 2 years ago. Two teams of rocket powered cars going at it in a (sometimes destructive) game of soccer. This at first seems very odd but is really engaging and one of the most satisfying games I have played to date. Since the cars can use a rocket powered boost they end up being able to boost themselves in the air and even do extremely cool looking aerial tricks to hit the oversized soccer ball while it is still in the air making for some extremely impressive stunts and saves that end up being pulled off throughout the matches. The game is extremely easy to get into but you quickly find that it has a massive skill ceiling and you will need to learn to stay grounded and wait before learning aerial tricks as there is a lot of timing and parts to the game that takes awhile to learn.
The amazing thing about this game is that it actually feels like a super fast and intense sports match and plays like one the popularity of rocket league has only climbed over the years just due to how amazing the core gameplay and i feel it all just comes down to how fun it is to play yet how skillful you need to become to be able to master the game as the game grows itself it sees itself gaining a bigger and bigger esports community which luckily enough adds longevity to the game and probably why we won't be seeing it go away anytime soon as we have seen.
Gameplay
The game comes down to a game of soccer, depending on the mode you pick you could have 2 teams of 1-4 cars trying to score as many goals in a 5 minute timespan. The matches are fast and super intense meaning this game is easily able to be pick up and played for a match at a time if needed.
I don’t think i have ever played a game that has got me turning with the controller getting so frantically hyped trying to score or save goals
Game modes in rocket league include :
- Standard Soccer (1v1, 2v2, 3v3, 4v4)
- Competitive Soccer (1v1, 2v2, 3v3 and 3v3 lobbied teams)
- Dropshot (3v3 requires breaking the ground with the ball and scoring into that)
- Rumble (3v3 get to use items during a soccer)
- Snow Day (3v3 Play using a puck! Ice hockey with cars)
- Hoops (3v3 Play with basketball nets instead of goals
- Rocket Labs (3v3 Non standard map pool with funky maps not found elsewhere)
After playing a match in Rocket League as well you get to unlock various cosmetics to change your car allowing you to customize your car in many different funky ways and since the game has been out for over 2 years there is hundreds of different cosmetics to unlock and choose from
Controls
Driving around in Rocket Leagues cars feels very nice and smooth but the timing of playing soccer with the said cars takes a lot of getting used to as everything is so fast paced and you need to be on point with your timing and patience of when to go after the soccer ball or hold back and be ready to intercept the ball, Controlling the car in the air is something you will can have difficulty learning and is very hard to get the hang of but that is the game of rocket league simple controls to pick up but much more skillful than first thought. I've played roughly 300 hours of this game through various platforms so far and am still learning a whole bunch on how to better myself at the game.
How does it stack up on the Switch?
Hands down the switch port is my new go to platform for Rocket League, the game runs at a lovely 60 FPS and while there may be a obvious downgrade in graphical quality compared to other consoles the game runs so smooth on a handheld and lets me easily take it anywhere and have a quick rocket league session without being tied down to my computer while doing so. Switch users will be happy that there is also cross play with other platforms and that we are receiving all the updates the same as other platforms as one would expect. BUT HEY THAT’S NOT ALL we also get a Mario/luigi car, hat and a Metriod car exclusive to the switch version letting us nintendo fanboys feel at home and super fancy on Rocket League.
