Nintendo confirms that Samus Returns "Fusion" mode will be locked behind its Amiibo

in #gaming7 years ago (edited)

Metroid is one of my favourite gaming franchises so it's a bit disheartening to see Nintendo lock a game mode behind a very difficult to get Amiibo. For those that don't know, fusion mode is the game's hardest difficulty. I guess we should have seen it coming since Zelda's hard-mode was paid DLC, but at least it was just DLC and you could get it whenever at a fixed price. The new Amiibo is subject to the supply and demand of a secondary product that has a notorious reputation for being scarce and a character like Samus would be flying off shelves even without these unlockables.

With saying that, I must ask the real question here.. why? It's not like that Amiibo will have any trouble selling, so why lock game modes behind it and not put them up as DLC? It seems Nintendo is dipping its feet into the bad DLC practices that many other companies did ages ago and it's sad to see it happen to Metroid of all games. It should also be noted that older model 2/3DS systems do not support Amiibo, so some of these gamers would actually have to get a new system or the amiibo scanner and the amiibo just to get a difficult mode. That is absurd to say the least. Later this week I'll be doing a much more in-depth writeup examining nintendo and the industry's DLC practices in general, so look out for that! As always, upvote, comment or resteem if you liked this.
