Gothic was a game that came out to wash away all the sins of Ultima 9 and raise the Action RPG genre from perdition. It was one of the few games that made you feel like you were in an actual, living world, and not in just a video game.

Aw, man... I loved Gothic back in the day. The controls were kind of clunky, but how the world felt alive and reacted to your actions and stuff, that's just ... Perfect!
Shame Piranha Bytes lost their charm and just rehashed the worst parts of this game while ignoring the good kind of a bit too much :(
Gothic series is one of the most respected brands in video games where I live and honestly, only now I see it coming to attention of western audience. And it's a real shame cause many people missed it when it was fresh. Now they might not get how important it was for tens of millions of central and east Europeans who in this game found their calling for video games.
Great review, you said pretty much everything that made this game one of the best things ever. I remember the factions, "Gothic vs Morrowind". To this day I still can't choose (alas, Gothic 3 was NOT on par with Oblivion). I'll always be fond of Gothic and its great immersion though, and I'll always remember jumping off Xardas' tower into the lake below, or being a templar and selling weed to the guys in New Camp for 10 ore pieces. Good times.
It is incredible how these guys keep doing the same game, and it keeps working amazingly 20 years later. I think of Risen, specifically. I think of Elex, although I don't know how much of the mechanics remained the same.
