Kingdom Come: Deliverance review by FreddyFish

Welcome to my review of Kingdom Come: Deliverance!

The short review, for people that are not into reading:
I think KCD needs a couple of patches to really reach its full potential, but that said there is a very solid game here hidden slightly by some minor but frustrating technical issues.

And now for the review!

Technical

Performance could be better but isn't the worst thing ever. I tend to get around 60-70 fps at 1440p on my 1080 and
i7 7700k, this often drops to around 30-40 in busy areas. Certainly playable, but I wish it was a little smoother.

Bug-wise, I've not hit any issues in quests directly, but I find the character getting stuck on terrain fairly often and have had some weird visual issues during dialogues. Again, nothing game breaking but a little frustrating and sometimes immersion breaking.

Story and Characters

The story is fairly formulaic, but I find myself enjoying the characters and dialogue rather a lot. The protagonist Henry is a surprisingly likable individual, and whilst you have full agency over the world, has a fairly fixed personality. Henry's youth and inexperience is a good way of introducing the player to the regional politics and also a good way of selling his rise from the son of a blacksmith, to a competent man at arms.

The world really pulls you into the medieval politics of the era, and you really get a feel for the day to day lives of the various people of Bohemia.

Gameplay

The combat is very good, all the animations and stances seem to come straight from the Talhoffer manuscript, and it feels very authentic. I was concerned it would be fairly slow from the trailers, but it's a pretty fast-paced game. The game does a decent job of introducing new combat techniques to you, mostly via trainers who test you on the proving grounds (and smack you around a bit if you don't take their lessons to heart!).

KCD offers quite a lot of solutions to quests, usually in the expected form of combat, sneaking or talking. This is generally well implemented in the examples I've seen. In an early side quest to obtain a dead man's possessions, you can beat up the town executioner to take his key, talk him into providing the goods, or pickpocket his key and steal the item without his knowledge. Each of these options may have minor consequences in the town. Choices and Consequences, VERY important in an RPG!

The game also has the usual mini-games for lockpicking, pickpocketing etc. These are the usual things you expect, slightly annoying, but they work.

Character development is learning by practice, with feat points unlocked for every few points you earn in a stat. The stats provide passive benefits themselves (such as strength increasing damage and weight capacity), and parks provide more specialized bonuses (such as being able to carry bodies faster). My only issue with this system is it creates the usual "grind" you might associate with the Elder Scrolls series (and many others). You will probably find yourself jumping a lot to train vitality for example.

Score

Overall I will give this game an 8/10.

In my opinion, this is one of the best medieval games I have played. There are a few things that have to be fixed, and that's why I'm giving it 8/10. This game is a must buy for all medieval lovers, but wait for the developers to fix some of the current issues.

And that's it for Kingdom Come: Deliverance !

I really enjoyed making this review, and I have put a lot of work into this, so...!
Please leave a like and a follow if you liked my review of Kingdom Come: Deliverance.
