OPINION: Geguri is being celebrated joining the Shanghai Dragons,

in #gaming7 years ago

This is purely my opinion on this subject, and something I wanted to possibly open up for a thoughtful, non toxic discussion.

Geguri is being celebrated joining the Shanghai Dragons, and more specifically OWL for the WRONG reasons. She is a very skillful and talented player, but being celebrated for her gender is like saying that she is ill-equipped compared to a male counterpart or talently inferior because of her gender. This has the opposite effect of what you hope to achieve by seeking 'representation'.

9/10 Geguri posts on my feed from various OW groups have had the focus being that she is a female gamer, not that "Shanghai is finally getting a Good off tank" or "it's about time she is recognized by teams in the OWL for her skill and accuracy compared to other tanks"

I do want to add a quick SN and mention that a possible reply I expect to see is that she had extra hurdles she had to face because of her gender and the All male Esports and OWL scene. To which I have 2 rebuttals. First is that there are many talented female gamers in the eSports community but majority are male coincidentally because more Guy Gamers decide to pursue a Risky career path like Professional gaming. As of a few years ago gamers were split 52/48 so it isn't like girls don't play video games.

Second, if you want to overcome any fear of a (insert) group you stop seeing them as that. So stop seeing male gamers as Male and you will feel less intimidated (theoretically) just as you stop seeing Seoul as unbeatable and suddenly you play as if you have a shot and play better than if you already know a negative outcome.(psychology, and once again theoretically). You stop going into job interviews thinking they already have candidates better fit for the position than you, and you show them Why you deserve it.

TL;DR? Intimidation by non-physical subject/idea is a mind game, and nothing more.

And I think her skill will speak for itself, but how will this affect the comps and starting line ups for the Dragons?

So we shouldn't appreciate a female gamer that decided to take the risky career as opposed to her peers?

In the 1st point you state differences between male and female gamers and in the 2nd you contradict yourself, make a decision: are there any differences or not?
