What is more profitable? | Playing video games or being a professional sportsman

in #gaming7 years ago

Electronic games events are getting more crowded and the money distributed by players can in some cases reach 17 million euros. Television audiences and advertising contracts have turned increasingly to this technology market.

Video gamers (electronic game players) is a fashion that has come to stay and becomes, every day, more financially profitable than being a professional athlete. Over the last ten years eSports events have in some cases overlapped professional sports, not only financially, but also at the television and advertising level.

For example, during this week dozens of professional eSports players will participate in Toronto, Canada, in a tournament where they will compete in different games, whose prizes can reach close to 900 euros, a minimum amount compared to the 17 million euros distributed by the players of the video game Dota 2, where several "fighters" compete in a virtual battle arena.

At the television level, the transmission of this kind of events has been increasing and the best example comes from China, when the broadcast of the final of the tournament of the video game "League of Legends", had an audience of 36 million viewers, more five millions than the NBA Finals between the Golden State Warriors and the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The fact that 61% of these players are between the ages of 18 and 34 makes them also appealing to advertising brands. Companies such as Red Bull, Coca-Cola, or Samsung bet more and more in the eSports market. According to NewZoo, a company that analyzes this type of market, estimates that in 2020 eSports can reach revenues of 1.2 billion euros.
