Another World 20th Anniversary

Another World was not a great sales success at the time, but it marked a before and after the industry, thanks to its innovative graphic design, the sound and the cinematic scenes it used to tell us in its plot. The animations of the characters surprised the critics and the public, because they only used them to relate to each other; the facial features, the gestures, the reactions, just great. Since then, Another World has been considered as a cult videogame. Developed for systems such as Atari and MS-DOS, it did not take long to reach other platforms such as Windows, 3DO, Super Nintendo or Mega Drive.

The protagonist of the story is Lester Knight Chaykin, a young scientist in a high-tech laboratory. During a strong storm, a lightning strike reaches the laboratory, destabilizing the particle accelerator with which Lester works, causing the red-haired boy to teleport to another alien world. During Lester's adventure, we must evade the dangers that lie in wait for us after being captured by a humanoid race of aliens; thus, we will fight against wild creatures, overcome complicated platforms and solve mysterious puzzles to try to escape this nightmare.

This version, celebrating its more than 20 years of release, has a slight remastering, where the graphic aspect has been improved and the sound section also received a small treatment, being able to choose if the remastered songs or the original versions, as well as the ports it has. Also, during your game you can change the graphics of that time or remastered with just one button.

The lack of dialogue gives a greater sense to being in solitude in a remote world, where you can not communicate with your partner or with enemy aliens.

The controls of the game are simple, you will only run, jump and make use of a gun and shield.

This 2D platform game will be a headache for new gamers, as it keeps the old-school touches, with a high difficulty where you will have to go through trial and error and frustration with checkpoints, as these will be very spaced, having to repeat many of your previous actions only to fall back into the same error.

The game will not help you at all, there are few clues that will give you so you can continue, everything will be based on observation, luck and learning. How would you know you can destroy a wall that is not highlighted, but that seems to be part of the scenario?.

Those who want easy achievements, you will get with this title, since the 1000gp that the game gives you, you simply take it out.

The adventure is short, it will only last a couple of hours, it does not have a repetition value, but it will extend for hours if you do not use a guide, since learning how to move on to the next part is delayed. .Otherworld: 20th Anniversary Edition is ideal for those who want to relive this game of discovery or for the little ones soak up the classics of videogames, if you are one of those who easily get frustrated or demand the latest graphics, this will not be your Title.

Gameplay

The playability of Another World reminds of titles like the classic Prince Of Persia or the modern Limbo, platforms based on the resolution of puzzles. In many adaptations to the virtual controls of the touch devices, the control is frustrating. In this case, although both the joystick and the action button respond with ease, the gameplay, in many cases, does not end up adjusting to the demands of a title at this level. Although we can get comfortable with the control of this 20th Anniversary Edition, thanks to the new intuitive control system, where all the buttons disappear from the screen. So, if we touch the screen with our finger, Lester will walk. If we slide our finger in one direction, it will run; if we do it up, it will jump and if we do it downwards, it will bend over.

If we touch a corner with our finger, we can use the ray gun and if we hold it for a moment, it will create a protective shield. If we keep the finger a few seconds, we will load the gun to shoot a much more powerful beam, which can destroy enemy walls and shields. The excessive distance between checkpoints also does not help advance the adventure, although players thirsty for challenges will feel well rewarded. In this sense, we also find three new levels of difficulty, which will benefit less skilled players. The level of difficulty by default will be the same as that of the original, leaving one simpler for novices and another more difficult for those who dare with something higher.

Pixels or HD?

Graphically, we are facing an identical conversion to the original title, although slightly improved, thanks to the smoothing of the pixels. We also found some more detailed backgrounds, something that might not like the fans of the original Another World too much, because it loses something of the essence of the 1991 title. Luckily, we can change at any time between the new version 20th Anniversary Edition and the original. The soundtrack remains at a high level, with its charismatic melodies remastered and that will transport us irremediably in the early nineties. The texts on the screen are in Spanish, something that is appreciated despite not being an essential element in this adventure.

Conclusion

The version that now comes to Android is basically the same 15th Anniversary Edition appeared on PC five years ago, with some additions. Maybe those who already made the previous version, do not find in the 20th Anniversary Edition enough reasons to return to other worlds, although the possibility of playing a classic of this caliber wherever we want is a luxury. Another World was a title so ahead of its time that even today it stands out from the rest thanks to its innovative mechanics and its careful conceptual design. Although the most experts do not take more than half an hour to overcome it - if they do not die and they know the way - we can not help but recommend a title that is so charismatic and innovative and that has helped to consider videogame more than just entertainment.

I loved this game. I really remember how frustrating was the level when you enter inside a pipe where you had to roll, while you were blown by sudden hot steam discharges!. What a remember hahahaha
