GAME-REVIEW | Dragon Ball Fighter Z – A Dream combo
From now and then you play games and just think to yourself, how the hell did they do that?
Dragon Ball FigherZ is one of them.
THE SIMPLICITY
I feel like every big Developer tries to reinvent every genre, pushing new technologies to the limit or achieve Photo-realism. But a good game is so much simpler than that, most players want to turn on their console or pc and just dive into a game and having a blast playing it.
This game is so simple, two Characters in a 3D Environment beating each other with great combos and even greater visual presentation. Everything just feels right and straight from the sketchbook of the Anime-artist.
But enough of the blank praise. I want to get in-depth on why I had so much fun playing this game and why u should give it a try if you like Beat’em up games.
THE FIGHTING
Of course, Arc System Works are known for good games like Guilty Gear or BlazBlue and made quite a reputation for themselves, but the games weren’t really mass appeal due to a high learning curve.
Dragon Ball FigherZ on the other hand is more beginner friendly.
With a button press you suck the energy -the Ki- out of your surroundings and transform them into attacks.
Like the Ki-Blast which is an Energy ball which was copied from numerous Animes out there. And while it looks like a blatantly spectacular mess at times, you never lose sight of what’s important.
And when it comes to choosing your favorite Character, you have to master all of them. There is no OP one, everyone has the same chance because there is a counter for every attack. Your opponent is doing his SUPER? You can dodge it, block it or even stop it with a good timed combo.
TEAM UP WITH A FRIEND
In the Tag-Team mode with 3 members each, having an overview of what’s happening is really important. And timing is really important too when it comes to Tag-Team matches, these can last up to 3 to 4 minutes. And to get that far, it requires strategic planning.
Get your teammate out for a couple of seconds for a partnered attack or fight alongside each other, it’s up to you. But exactly that makes online matches so heart pounding and great, because if you and your buddy win you will feel like gods, ready to take down anyone.
DOWNSIDES
When it comes to a working story, it feels like an expedient experience. You can tell that the developers focused on the multiplayer aspect of the game. Which fairly is probably the main reason people buy this game.
I don’t want to spoiler anything so I will leave it at that: don’t expect anything new but you will be happy seeing your childhood heroes again with some fan service here and there.
HOW THE HELL DID THEY DO THAT?
Arc System Works created a Fight system that appeals to everyone, but still has enough depth to keep tournament players busy.
I had blast playing this game as a Beat’em up-game fan and the Dragon Ball setting was just the icing on the cake for me. Even though the Story is kinda boring, there are just too much positive points for me to stop playing this game.
SCORE --> 90/100 AMAZING
