Well, I guess I haven't really addressed the dilemma in the context of your Golden Rule. To do that, you should ask yourself: how would you not like to be treated by the person inside the cabin if it were you waiting outside? Then, eliminate those options you wouldn't like and finally arrive at the answer.
Just as a side comment, I don't see how it would be obvious that you wouldn't be believed if you tried to tell the truth; that's just assuming the worse... And even if you weren't believed, what then? Would you really care that much?
I'm always glad to talk about the big issues that our society is facing! Thank you for bringing this very pressing matter to discussion. ;-)
