'Twas The Night Before The First Day Of School...

Today is a sad day for children and teens all over the world. Because tomorrow is the first day of school. So today we have to pack our school bags, label our binders, plan our lunches, and put our summer clothes away, reluctantly might I add. And I do feel like the majority of Steemit users are either in university, or already past it, but that doesn't mean you can't relate to the horrific realization that school starts tomorrow and what it entails.

One would think that today is the only day of the year where my expectations are so low, I can't possibly be disappointed tomorrow. But you're wrong, oh so wrong. Because somehow, every single year, the universe manages to stack everything against you on the very first day.

You walk in and your friends are nowhere to be seen, but you do see those popular people who think they're better than you because they wear Nike sandals standing across the room chatting in hushed tones. After some confusion you find your homeroom teacher and she turns out to be the kind of woman who takes to much of an interest in your home life, paints her nails behind her desk with the windows closed, and moves your binders over to sit on your desk while she asks you how to operate google. Or you might have the homeroom teacher that thinks he's funnier than he actually is, makes science puns, and laughs at you when you get an answer wrong.

After that dreadful encounter, it's time for locker assignments. You cross your fingers and your toes, literally praying for a top locker, because everybody knows that the bottom locker is the absolute worst, you have to sit on the dirty floor while grabbing your books with one hand and shielding your head from falling items with the other. Your homeroom teacher calls your name (with some trouble might I add,) and assigns you locker number 384. Your heart skips a beat because you can't remember if even numbers are top lockers are bottom lockers. You slowly make your way out of the room and after a while, you find your locker, the farthest one from your classroom. It's at the bottom, of course. The girl with the top locker is already there, and it doesn't look like she wants to move for you, as she's too busy sticking on wallpapering her locker to acknowledge your presence.

It feels like forever before she leaves and you can finally open your own disappointing locker. There are scratches in the metal that spell out nasty words, and some stickers left by somebody who obviously didn't realize how difficult stickers are to remove. You stuff your binders inside and have a little trouble with your combination, which of course, is something like 36 41 287 while everyone else is laughing about having combos that are like 2 22 12. You roll your eyes, stick your combination in your pocket, and make the long trek back to your homeroom.

The day goes by in a blur of grey. You frown at the realization that this will be everyday until June. Every. Single. Day.
There's nothing left to do but to resign yourself to the fact that this is life as you know it, and you haven't even gotten to the bullies, the cliques, and the stuff that the cafeteria is passing off as food yet.
You sigh. It can't get any better right? But at least it can't possibly get worse.
