5 "Facts" you thought were true - Part 1
Nowadays an average human spends a lot of time surfing the internet We digest a lot of information and when we see something, we assume it is true. How many times do you see a news article where in the title it says one thing, and when you actually go to the article it talks about something completely different. Well today, I am going to present you 5 "facts" you thought were true.
1. Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world.
Mauna Kea has an altitude of 4,205 meters (13,796 feet) much lower than Mount Everest. However, Mauna Kea is an island, and if the distance from the bottom of the nearby Pacific Ocean floor to the peak of the island is measured, then Mauna Kea is "taller" than Mount Everest.
2. Humans have 5 senses
It turns out there are at least nine senses and most researchers think there are more like 21. It is still taught in some schools that there are 5 senses. This came from Aristotel. Some of the 21 senses are: balance, muscle tissue sense, joint position sense, time sense etc
3. People use just 10 percent of their brain
The 10 percent of the brain myth is a widely perpetuated urban legend that most or all humans only use 10 percent of their brains. It has been misattributed to many people, including Albert Einstein. The popular notion that large parts of the brain remain unused, and could subsequenty be "activated", rests in popular folklore and not science.
4. A goldfish has a memory span of three seconds.
It has been scientifically proven that fish can remember for up to 5 months. Scientists at the Israeli Technion institute of Technology in Haifa spent a month learning baby fishes to associate a certain sound with feeding time. Then they released the fish into the wild. After five months scientists repeated the sound and the fish returned.
5. Vikings wore horned helmets
There is no historical or archaeological evidence to support this. The myth was probably propagated after German painter and costume designer Carl Emil Doepler created the horned helmet for the first time in 1876 for Richard Wagner's opera "Der ring de Nibelungen.
