We Decide Who We Become (Part 1)
I sit here, frustrated with this past week. I am nearing my Junior year of university and have maintained a 4.0 the entire time. Through a technical issue on the school's part, I was unable to submit an assignment on time, and my professor just does not want to hear it. She gave me a zero on the assignment, acting in the comment as if I had not been emailing her back and forth for the past week on this issue. And poof... my 4.0 is flying away from me at warp speed.
I am working my way up to apply for Doctoral school next year, and that 4.0 has been very important to me since the beginning. I know it may seem silly to some because it's just a grade, but it's more than that. If it were a quality issue, I would accept that as a failure on my part. However, this was a technical issue which the school has accepted.
So, I am waiting out the weekend, hoping to hear from my professor. If not, I suppose the next step is to reach out to the academic advisory board because this issue should not penalize me, as it was out of my control.
What is my entire point to this post? Part of it is venting, I will admit that, but part of it is to remind us that everyone is human. Everyone has those down moments, those off moments, those happy moments, those sad moments, and those ecstatic moments. Those moments are what shape our lives and who we are as individuals. It is not what the moment is that matters, but what choices are made from that moment. We choose who we become.
I have a quote by Maimonides hanging right next to my bedroom door that says, "We decide whether to make ourselves learned or ignorant, compassionate or cruel, generous or miserly." I love this quote because it is a needed reminder that WE decide who we become. Our past, present, family, friends, culture, school, status, and such only help influence how we turn out, but it is ultimately we who decide.
Thank you all for reading. I do appreciate you taking the time out of your day! What are some of your favorite quotes?
