Actually the only way I've modified this recipe is using some seasoning. This last time I made them, I added a bit of nutmeg into a part of the dough. However, I'm not sure if I like it, so I didn't want to mention it in the recipe. But oh why haven't I tried to use e.g. sweet potato instead of potato, I think I could be delicious!
