Iba/Kamias: Fruits in the Philippines

Scientific Name: Averrhoa bilimbi
(also known as bilimbi or cucumber tree)

The Fruit

The average size of the iba fruit is 3-6cm. I put my hand in the background so you can compare.

The nutrients that can be found in the edible portion of thr fruit are: protein, fiber, phosphorus, calcium, iron, thiamine, riboflavin, carotene, abscorbic acid, and niacin.

The Tree

The iba tree is common in South East Asian Countries. It can reach up to 10 meters long.

Practical Uses

In the Philipines, the leaves of the iba plant are made into paste to relieve itches, insect bites and other minor skin problems. In other countries such as India, the fruit itself is used to help with inflammations. The effectiveness is not scientifically proven in these applications.
