Outcry

"...outcries coming from further down The Deeps..."

Is this a phrase out of a book? It sounds boring to me. The Deeps... I doubt it is the same as the Hole. How many shouts, cries, are carried out of them? It might be way less as expected. Is the hole still a hole in the ground where they dump you till you learned your lesson or is it "isolation" with once a day a meal and no contact with others? Some stay there for a few days, others for weeks or even years. It makes me think if they put you there because it is easier.

It can not be fun to guard criminals, be scold while you do your job. It's not different from being the hangman. You wear a cap/bag over your head to protect you but the whole village knows who you are. It's saver to be single. Imagine your dad is the executor. You can better be a sadist if you have a job like that. If no payment is high enough. A hitman or bounty hunter gets paid way better.
Hung, burned, electroshock, injection, stoned to death or shot, it will be hard not to shout out loud or feel outcried.

Shouldn't the jury or judge do the execution themselves or the one who wants his right? I guess it's easier to stay mad if someone else does the dirty job, delivers the heart or head on a silver plate like in the fairy tale Snowwhite and in the Bible happens more as once. It's what many do with their pets too. Dump it elsewhere so it's not their decision to put it asleep.
