His Journey to the Main Street - Day 786 Freewrite Sunday

Never thought that he would go this far, he climbed even further up to the top. Having sat on a comfortable chair as the Head Project of the Environment Department, he was ready for a new challenge in the company which he started to join three years ago. He asked for a bigger role and finally landed on a new position to lead the whole department. He was determined to bring bigger change to the industry.

It has been known that fast fashion gave huge environmental problems to the third countries where the clothes were being made, some included a very low wage to many millions of its workers and it even involved child labor in some cases. The projects he has been doing for the last couple of years were mainly to grab the public attention and bluntly said that it was all alright at the end. A false believe was shared that a little contribution that his team created on the ground would somehow erase the big issues and allowed the industry to continue the way it was.

But, this time it all would change under his lead. He would not rest until he found a way to bring back the environment into the core of his department. Faced with a tight budget and limited human force, he needed to be creative. It was not easy to hold a bachelor's degree in forestry and a master degree in Environment Conservation and ended up working in a famous clothing company, which created huge problems for the environment itself. He got to pay the bill and the loan as everybody else so he followed his dream to reach to the top of the hierarchy and hoped he could make a chance for once.

Like fighting a giant, the core issues were buried deep down below. He planned a step by step schedule where the company would actually give back to the countries where the products were being made, including installing an efficient water & disposal management system, providing a health care system and education training for the workers. He included a list of progress that the company made over the last year and how these actions favoured the customers who were increasingly attentive to the impacts they made over their purchases. He presented his idea to the board over a 45-min meeting and at the end of the meeting, the direction just went silence.

We couldn't change the world we were living in, but we could create a huge impact but changing our own habits. Tom went home that day, feeling a huge relief as if the burden he was carrying around was lifted up from his shoulders. He applied the very next day to be a scientist on a local water conservation board which would help many of local businesses. That was the beginning of his involvement to the Main Street.
