My name is Barr and this is my story!

My father (Toon) is a middle income earner, he works at our local government secretariat as a secretary. He doesn't earn much but earn enough to provide for his family. We are just three(I,my dad and mum) and we live an affordable quality life.

When I was 10, I often looked at my father with disdain, felt sorry him and myself. Maybe I can forgive myself for feeling like that now but back then.. I loathe him for he was my father. Don't you feel sorry for me! It's the things I saw around that changed my view of life at that age.

I was admitted into one of the best secondary school in the country through scholarship, the only privileged individual from the middle income family. All other students in the school were from wealthy family. I was brilliant and needs to learn where quality education is given they said to convince my father.

When, I resumed there, everything was completely different I was the subject of discussion in class. No one would sit with me or talk to me during lunch. I was different and like a plague everyone avoided me no matter what. Twice my father had visited, I complained to him..hoping he'll take me away from there instead he advised me, telling me to be strong, that this is the best place for me. It was all good in there afterall except I couldn't interact well, but everything in there was different, the bed I sleep in, the food that's served. I was blending in somehow.

When the term end, I went back home. Oh! I hate it back home now, what was once my safe haven, I detest the food now... Eeew! Look at the meat, so small... I complained of everything! My father accommodated some of my complains, change some things around the house but I was never going to be satisfied with it.

So one evening he call me and said::

"Why aren't you appreciating what you have
Some people are homeless
But here you have shelter
Some are hungry
But here you eat
Some can't get into school
But you're enjoying scholarships
Learn to be appreciative of what you have!"

I was humbled, I cried! He hugged me tightly while I keep saying "Dad, I'm sorry"
Then, I went to mum and said "Thank you Mummy for everything" she smiled and hugged me too.

End!
