RE: Freewrite #2 for me. Saxophone!
You're going to hate me: my least favorite instrument among high school bands was the sax, mostly because in a rural town of 500, good musicians were hard to find among all those corn stalks and cattle lots. Oboes sounded like ducks, clarinets squeaked, and (to my everlasting regret) I never participated in band because I'm allergic to unpleasant noises (like the sound of chewing; quick, turn on the radio to drown it out). My sisters all went out for band (you can imagine my pain when they practiced coronet and French horn at home). One of them has a daughter who plays sax to this day at age 27, on stage, with various bands. I was relieved when my own offspring gravitated to strings - Suzuki violin, then cello, then upright bass, and flute. I married a very musically gifted guy who brought live music, GOOD live music, into our home. So, when the kids left home, they took LIVE music with them, and no recording can compare. The wooden floors vibrating to the upright bass, the walls humming with trios and Dad on piano -- GONE! -- and again I'm punished for my years of dreading live music at school band concerts. :)
