Daily Opinion #9: Free speech in the US does not apply to private organizations

The first amendment does not apply to facebook, twitter, youtube, or any other social media.

These are private companies, and they can censor whatever they want. You are free to start your own platform/website and say whatever you want, but since you are using someone else's platform/website, they can censor whatever they want. They are private companies and not the government, so the first amendment does not apply.

If you are in a bar and they don't like what you have to say to fellow customers, they can kick you out. If you are out on the street and people don't like what you have to say, they cannot kick you off the street. That is how the first amendment works. It does not extend to private companies.

But that being said, this is why decentralized social media is so important - everyone needs a street that they cannot be kicked off of.

The steem blockchain can be that street.

And that's the daily opinion.
