Today I learned that the Chinese fortune cookie was invented in the United States, not by Chinese. The cookie, as we know it today, was probably invented by Japanese in the late 19th century and became popular among the Chinese population of the United States only during World War II. When fortune cookies were first brought to China, they were marketed under the name "Native American Fortune Cookies."
