The comment about finding the vine and washing them off in the creek brought back memories of childhood in Alabama. While they were in season I remember picking them with my family from wild vines for Mom to make jelly. Absolutely delicious.
I was born and raised in Atlanta, but my grandparents farm was up on top of Sand Mountain. One of my aunts still lives on the same street. I have spent A LOT of time in Alabama.
