James Milner own goal was ‘a great header’: Rio Ferdinand criticises Liverpool team-mate
Milner was extremely unfortunate in putting through his own goal in the Champions League semi-final second-leg clash.
After Sadio Mane extended Liverpool’s aggregate lead to 6-2, Lovren attempted to clear the ball but could only boot it at team-mate Milner.
It rebounded off the midfielders’ face and left goalkeeper Loris Karius helpless.
Ferdinand says Lovren could have cleared it better but says it was a “great header” from Milner.
If Lovren’s being critical of himself he might say he could have got it a bit higher.
“But this is so unfortunate here. James Milner, great header in the end!
“He’ll be disappointed but he’s had another fantastic game Milner today.”
BT presenter Gary Lineker found it funny and says Milner will eventually.
“He’s had a mild chuckle there,” Lineker said.
“He’ll definitely laugh about it in time, as long as nothing dramatic happens in the second half.”
The own goal did not cost Liverpool too dearly as the game ended 4-2 to Roma on the night, with the Reds going through to the final 7-6 on aggregate.
