What can we learn from Pako (Paco) leaves?
Paco or Pako is one of the fern vegetables that Filipinos love to eat. This vegetable which has a scientific name of Athyrium esculentum, is usually eaten as salad or as a side dish to a main viand. Aside from its distinctive taste, paco is very well known to be healthy among Filipinos. (Google)

While preaching in Basey, Samar today I found these kids cleaning and binding some plants. I asked them what it was, they said it is Pako (Paco). They actually take those edible fern and sell it at a cost of five pesos(11 cents) per tie/bind. I was a bit surprised because it was more
cheaper than those in the stores. Then I ask them if they were still studying, they answered Yes. They will just do it when there's no class. I asked them again what they had to do with the money they earned, they said it will be their pocket money at school. At an early age these children are able to earn a living so they can support their needs. In the present day, it is rare
to find such responsible children like them. Their industriousness is outstanding!
They set a good example in the society and for those
able-bodied individuals who just sit on the road side waiting for someone drop money for them as their living. These young ones weren't forced to do such
thing and nobody violates their rights as children in order to gain a small amount of money, but instead, these children simply used their initiative. This kind of
thinking will help them become more responsible in the future, as they grow. 😊

Hi there! Those ferns aren't easy to find. It is always depends on its environment. They are cheap in rural areas but in Manila it costs too much.
