Harvesting Wild Chiltepin Peppers in Austin, Texas Day 1786 - Journey With No Destination

I'm back to my home base, Austin, Texas, to hopefully find my lost
passport in my storage unit and to harvest some wild chiltepin peppers so I can make some hot sauces that I sell under the brand name Rabbit in the Moon. If you are interested in purchasing some go to MotherOfAllPeppers.com
The chiltepin seed is very difficult to germinate and successfully plant as a commercial pepper and so most are harvested in the wild in the state of Sonora in Mexico. Austin seems to be the mecca for this pepper as the climate and soil conditions must be to this plant's liking. The plant loses its leaves during the first freeze and new growth returns in the spring. It likes partial shade and will commonly be growing under a small tree along a slope where the drainage is good. In Sonora they will be growing in canyons in a mountainous area to protect it from the intense summer heat. These are hand picked and even with the lower labor costs in Mexico they will still demand a higher price per pound than any other pepper. It is the heirloom pepper and progenitor of other peppers grown commercially and hence the name "the mother of all peppers." There is a protected area in Southern Arizona north of Nogales in the Coronado National Forest called the Wild Chile Botanical Area.
I currently don't have any pepper jelly available, but will soon have two hot sauces ready that can be ordered on my website. I will also have dried whole peppers, fresh whole peppers, dried flakes and chili powder available as well. I will be posting a red and a green salsa recipe soon on my blog.
