My Journey to Becoming Cooking Ninja - Baklava

Hello, Steemians! For today I am going to prepare one of the most delicious and the most popular desserts - Baklava.


For this very sweet and very strong delicacy we need the following ingredients:

  • 2 packages of puff pastry (800 g)
  • 800 g of ground walnuts
  • 800 g of sugar
  • 100 g of butter
  • 100 ml of oil
  • 1 vanilla sugar
  • 1 baking powder
  • 2 lemons
  • 4 cups of water

For the beginning we will prepare topping. Fill the sugar and vanilla sugar in the pot and pour water over it. Cook for about 5 minutes on high heat. Topping should not be too dense. The density should be somewhere between syrup and water. After our topping is cooked, add the sliced lemon. We will put it to stay because topping needs to be cooled down before we are going to use it.

Melt butter on the low heat and mix it with oil. In the baking tray lay down the first three puff pastry sheets and coat them with the mixture of butter and oil. Make sure to coat every single sheet. This mixture should be warm, because it will give the crustiness. Sprinkle it with ground walnuts previously mixed with baking powder. Lay over that the next two puff pastry sheets, and again coat them with the mixture of butter and oil and sprinkle with ground walnuts. Repeat the process until you have used all the puff pastry sheets. But, on the top of the last sheet don't coat with the butter.

The next thing we want to do is to carefully slice our baklava pastry. To prevent pastry from cracking cut it with wet knife.

After you're done, place the baking tray in the oven. The first fifteen minutes bake at 200 C (390 F degrees), until it gets light brown color, and then leave it to dry for 25 minutes at 150 C (300 F degrees).

After our baklava is baked and still hot, pour over with the cold topping we prepared at the beginning.

Of course, it is hard to wait until the baklava is cooled of, but the taste is best if you let it stay over night.
