Hey Hive!

We're back with more of our hawker adventures! It's been a while but one of the things we do on dates is trying out different stalls in different hawker centers to find which are our favourites!

If you've never patronised a hawker center before, they are typically non-air conditioned buildings that house all kinds of food stalls specialising in one or two signature dishes. They're ubiquitous here in Singapore and Malaysia and are known for delicious and affordable food - the perfect combination! They're definitely where you can find the best food in Singapore and is our go-to place for food!

Last month, we had to return to the East side of Singapore for a health checkup and after getting 3 injections each we decided to go get a snack at the nearby hawker center in this building called Our Tampines Hub.

This is Singapore’s first and largest integrated community and lifestyle hub. It has been quite a few years since we've been here but we remember this place quite fondly since it's very spacious mostly open-air building housing more than 30 community, sports, cultural, civic and lifestyle facilities all under one roof! With a movie screening area, swimming pool, running track, football field and many studios, shops, restaurants and enrichment centers this place made the East quite a bustling area.

We used to come here back in our college days and since we were back in the neighbourhood we wanted to check out the stalls here and see if they're still the ones we remember.

It seemed to be the same for the most part, although some of the stalls had changed. It was around 4 in the afternoon so we weren't super hungry at the time and just wanted to get something light. This stall in particular seemed very popular for tea time snacks, but we'll get to that.

I hadn't eaten much and just wanted a little something so we decided to share a plate of curry rice from this stall that we used to patronise as well.

We were pleasantly surprised to see that they still had the same affordable meal for $2.80. It's a really simple meal of just a chicken drumstick, fried egg and rice but we used to buy this when we got home late from college and there weren't that many stalls left open.

Here's what it looks like irl, and it also included a piece of boiled potato and a generous dousing of curry sauce.

image.png

We were impressed and relieved that it was still as delicious as the last time we had it! The curry was a little on the spicy side but very savoury and yummy all the same.

image.png

After that we were still a little peckish and decided to check out the stall that had a long line of people. Turns out they're selling Min Jiang Kueh, which is a nostalgic Singaporean snack that's a soft, fluffy pancake with filling sandwiched in between.

image.png

It's one of our favourite snacks as well and I especially like the ones with crunchy sweet peanut filling. This stall in particular has many different flavours from the usual peanut and red bean to more unique fillings like Matcha, Earl Grey, Biscoff, Thai milk tea and Black Sesame. Everything is also made fresh right in the stall itself, so I can see why this is so popular.

image.png

There were so many flavours to choose from, but since we've never tried this stall/chain before we went with the usual peanut flavour, and tried a kaya (sweet coconut jam) one as well.

image.png

This is what the peanut pancake looks like. It was a little thinner than we expected but they were generous with the filling although I would've liked a better proportion of filling to pancake. It was still fluffy and yummy though!

image.png

This was the kaya one which was a little more fluid but thankfully not as sweet as I anticipated. It actually matched pretty well with the pancake and was quite delicious overall too.

image.png

Overall they were all very scrumptious snacks and I think Munchi Pancakes has multiple stalls in Singapore so the next time we see it we'll definitely try it again, since we hardly visit the East anymore. It was still a nice visit back to our old haunts though.

That's all for today thanks so much for reading!
