A traditional Japanese restaurant west of Tokyo where you can try yakitori, robatayaki, and kaiseki meals surrounded by nature!

Ukaitoriyama (うかい鳥山)
Located near Mt. Takao in Tokyo

This gorgeous restaurant is a great place to enjoy traditional Japanese food and scenery and escape from the rush of city life. Although it's hidden in the mountains they have a free shuttle bus from the nearest station (Takaosanguchi Station) and also offer free parking. You can enjoy yakitori, robatayaki, and kaiseki type meals here!

It's a little pricey: course meals start at 4,000 yen and go up to over 10,000 yen per person depending on what it includes. But considering the amazing location and beauty of each dish, most foodies seem to agree its worth it.

Featured here: chicken skewer, chicken meatball skewer, onion skewer, potato skewer, myouga skewer, shishito pepper skewer (all before being cooked!). They also have meal sets with beef or fish.

The restaurant opened in 1964 and has a gorgeous traditional Japanese look both inside and outside. It's popular as both a date spot and a place to take your parents or relatives out for a nice dinner. Parts of the restaurant can even be used for wedding receptions!

One fun part of the experience is that you can cook all the skewers right at your table. Be careful to cook the chicken thoroughly though!

In addition to the food, the garden is also a popular attraction with lots of fireflies in the summer and colorful autumn leaves in the fall. The Mt. Takao area also has some easy half-day hikes and several big temples you can visit, so it makes for a nice weekend outing.
