Perfect winter comfort dessert.
Here's the recipe! Enjoy ~
Ingredients:
dough
3 Cups (384g) flour (plus extra for work surface)
1 tsp (5.7g) salt
1.5 sticks (3/4 cups) (255g) butter cubed
¾ cup (177ml) ice water
filling
6 Tart Apples chopped (Granny Smith, Rome, or Honey Crisp)
1 TSP (4g) ground cinnamon
½ TSP (2g) Ground nutmeg
2 TBSP (25g) sugar
2 TBSP (25g) melted butter
2 cups (680g) brown sugar
1 2/4 cups (296ml) water
Directions
1. Preheat oven to 400°F (204°C). In a large bowl, mix together the flour and salt. Using a fork (or pastry blender) cut in the butter until mixture is crumbly with pea-sized pieces. 1 TBSP at a time add ice water to the mixture and mix with the fork until the mixture holds together. If the dough is still crumbly add a little more ice water.
2. Using a knife remove 1/3 of the dough and place in the fridge (keep dough cold). Next, flour the countertop and using a rolling pin (or hands) flatten out the dough evenly into a 6inch by 6 inch square and then divide (cut) into 4 squares. Remove the 1/3 piece of dough from the fridge and flatten out evenly into a 6inch by 12 inch rectangle then divide into two squares. You should have 6 squares of dough in total. Place the squares of dough on parchment lined baking pan and cover it with a plastic wrap then place it in the fridge.
3. In a small bowl mix the chopped apples, cinnamon, nutmeg, 2 tbsp sugar, and melted butter.
4. Place the apple mixture onto the center of each square of dough. Moisten the edges of the square with a little bit of water and fold in the corners of the square and pinch them together along with the edges. Place the dumplings in a glass or metal dish.
5. In a saucepan, while stirring, bring to a boil the brown sugar and 1 2/4 cups water for about 5 minutes. Once the sugar syrup is done, pour the syrup around the dumplings.
6. Bake for 30 minutes while occasionally basting the syrup over the apples about 2 times. Apple dumplings will be ready when the crust is golden brown and the apples are tender (pierce with toothpick to check).
