Weather your new to becoming a vegan or you are just thinking about it for now, you have stumbled upon this post for one simple reason.
Making the change can be challenging
Here are the top 5 Mistakes to avoid when going vegan
1.
Don't Assume That All vegan Products Are Healthy
This is the easiest and most common mistake all new vegans will face, and personally my biggest downfall. When i first became a vegan almost 9 years ago, i thought it was going to be a walk in the park, and just as long as i wasn't eating meat all would be good, Oh how wrong i was. It turns out filling up on bread, pasta and rice was not the way, after gaining almost 5kg i was horrified and knew something had to change right away.
I think it's safe to say doing your research is key here, to ensure you get the correct nutrients during your transition.
2.
Don't Go Cold Turkey
Becoming a vegan is not something that can be done over night, In fact it took me almost 6 months before i could call myself a vegan, it really does take a lot of focus and dedication to reach your goal. According to recent Research If you commit to becoming a vegan a pace that suits yourself, you will be much more likely to succeed.
3.
Be Sure To Stock Up On Vitamin B12
Although some vegans may need vitamins and supplements that other's don't, vitamin B12 is non-negotiable and all vegans should take it. The only place it occurs naturally is in meat (or on the soil of vegetables but you'd have to eat a hell of a lot of soily crops to get what you need). Though you can get some B12 in fortified foods like plant milks and veggie meats, to get as much as you need, a supplement is essential.
4.
Don't Over Do It With The Soy
Soy comes in many shapes and sizes and in general, critics overstate the dangers of soy and the promoters exaggerate its benefits.
Though scientists are still arguing over the effects of soy on cancer and heart health, one thing is for certain. Consuming too much soy-based vegan 'meat' is arguably worse than consuming high-quality animal products. Meat substitutes are often highly processed and loaded with sodium and preservatives, so read labels carefully. The healthiest sources of soy are miso, tempeh, tofu, soy milk, and edamame.
5.
Try Not To Do It Alone
Sharing food is a way of life and how a lot of us stay connected to and bond with friends and family, so becoming vegan could change some of your relationships. And being in "the lonely vegan in the crowd" is one of the most common things that trips up new vegans.
But don't give up on all the social stuff you love or stop hanging out with people if you don't know any vegans, i would recommend finding local vegan meetups. Or failing that, you can find fellow vegans here on Steemit or other social networks.
So weather you are becoming a vegan for Environmental, Ethical, Health or Personal reasons, i wish you all the best with your journey.
