Viet-YUM! A guide to authentic Vietnamese cuisine!

EPISODE 1 - Bún chả at 34 Hàng Than

Welcome hungry friends! You've come to the tastiest blog on Steemit! This is our first edition so let me give you a quick introduction and talk about what you can expect from this blog. My name is Kyle Baird, and I'm a 29- year-old American who has been living in northern Vietnam for the past 2 and a half years. I've created this blog with the help of my amazing Vietnamese girlfriend, to share with everyone a taste of the best authentic Vietnamese dishes. Fire up your taste buds and grab a towel, because this blog will have you drooling!

Let's get this blog started on a high note with my favourite dish here: bún chả. A fun fact about bún chả - - On president Obama's 3 day visit to Vietnam in May of 2016, he visited a bún chả spot with Anthony Bourdain. My go-to bún chả place in Hanoi is 34 Hàng Than.

Bún /Boon/ - Vermicelli noodles, very popular in northern Vietnamese dishes.

Chả /Chah/ - A grilled flattened meatball. Most often made from pork or fish. In this particular dish it also includes grilled and sliced pork belly.

Above you can see the plate of bún that is served warm.

In the bowl you can see the chả served in a hot broth of diluted fish sauce, sugar, lime, and thin sliced green papaya. The broth is sweet and salty and traps the amazing flavor of the char-grilled pork.

Nem with greens and beans

Bún chả is normally eaten with another Vietnamese favorite, Nem Cua (crab spring rolls). Nem Cua is normally made with crab meat, carrot, vermicelli, mushroom, and egg wrapped in rice paper and deep fried.

The diner can grab some of the bún to add to the broth and meat bowl and if they wish, it can be topped with fresh greens and bean sprouts.

From there you just mix and let the flavor of the broth soak into the noodles! You best bring your appetite, because you'll be expected to eat a lot!

A nice drink to pair with your meal is a classic iced tea or pictured above, my girlfriend's sữa đậu nành - Soy Milk!

If you're ever in Hanoi this is the one of the most popular places to get bún chả. So pull up a small plastic chair and get eatin'!

Wow that dinner looks so fancy. What was your favorite dish? @secretplans

It's not really that fancy at all :) The whole meal cost us a litte under 100k VND or $4.50!

Definitely looks like the gf and I xD

looks delicious!

Thanks man, get back out here sometime and get some!

I love bún chả in Hanoi! The funny thing is we actually didn't know how to eat it, so the chef taught us. Very delicious!

I also remember my first one. Had to get taught by one of the workers :)

At least we do know now :D

Woah! Next time direct me to the best places for vegetarian food :-)

Well I know a really good vegetarian buffet that's one of the best in the city. I'll put that on the list for you!
