Dining at Fort Nassau

After the short visit at Fort Nassau with my guest, I decided to go back for dinner some days later.

In the 17th century The Dutch used the name “Fort Nassau” for many of their fortifications. Besides the one in Curacao, there is a Fort Nassau in the Netherlands, Bahamas, Banda Islands, New York, New Jersey, Ghana, Senegal, and Guyana.

Fort Nassau Curacao was built in 1797 to defend the island from enemy attacks. The Fort was originally named Fort Republic by the Dutch. Later on the British conquered the island of Curacao. In 1816, due to the Treaty of Paris, Curaçao was returned to the Dutch again and in honor of the Dutch Royal family the Fort was named Fort Orange Nassau.

Fort Nassau is located on a 68 meter high hill next to the St. Anna Bay.

Today the Fort plays a fundamental role for the harbor (from this place harbor master signals are sent to countless incoming and outgoing vessels). In 1959 Fort Nassau declared a National Monument.

Besides the important function for the maritime world, Fort Nassau has a beautiful restaurant.

The restaurant has a 360 view over the Harbor of Willemstad, Curacao. The restaurant is semi open-air. You can feel the atmosphere of the old 18th century combined with a modern interior design.

As entree we enjoyed a vegetarian salad made on special request and a grilled shrimp in garlic cream sauce . The food was fine, but as I did earlier, I was so anxious when the main entrance arrived at the table, that I forgot to take pictures. My bad …..
