Strobist Technique on Food Photography

in #food6 years ago

Hello buddy all, today I want to share my photos and also strobist technique in photography. Anyone already know what it is?

Strobist technique has been growing among the photographers. This technique uses an external flash with off-shoe flash that is not attached to the camera. It is controlled by radio or infrared signal as a trigger to operate the flash.

In different types of photography, many photographers use external flash to produce better images. We can see beautiful food photography in Instagram and other social media. However, many also rely on natural light and it is a lack of strobist techniques. Therefore, photographers should be able to manage time and location effectively in shooting food.

There are several benefits when you use the strobist technique on food photography, which is mobility, efficient and good image quality. A flash lamp with strobist technique uses the battery as the main power, allowing the photographer to shoot without the need for an electrical outlet.

The strobist technique is ideal for photographing food. The light temperature generated by the external flash is not as high as the other, so the texture of the dish will not be affected. For the most part, higher light temperatures can change the natural features of foods such as textures. Another benefit is that it applies to all types of food. Photographers who use this technique need full experience and photographic understanding to adjust the light in each dish.

Using strobist techniques when filming drinks is not like filming food. We need to pay attention to the amount of light that can affect the color of the drink or the details of the glass. This change can also occur when you use the appropriate accessories with flash lights. Now I will give some tips and tricks to use external flash on food imaging.

Advantages of using external flash:

  1. Comes with lightweight, easy to transport and simple design, which can be carried in bulk.
  2. Use battery as main power. Do not worry if the site does not contain power lines.
  3. It has a lower flash temperature than studio lighting which may not be suitable for cold dishes.
  4. Short flash duration is able to freeze the moving body.
  5. Be able to produce the true color of the object when it interrupts another light. For example room lights and others.
  6. Accessories can be used in studio lighting equipment as flash light, if we have a suitable flash adapter.

Tips on food imaging

  1. The white balance and fine color accuracy will greatly affect the image of the dish we are displaying. The wrong balance in the white balance can affect the beauty of the image.
  2. Lighting on photographic food is different from other imaging types. Where we put the back light as the main light. Place the lamp behind or slightly above the object. If we do, the image will look better.
  3. Use good quality flash like Canon Speedlite, because it has better temperature and other great features.
  4. Arrange a good combination, so that the POI (point of interest) is concentrated on the dish.

In conclusion, strobist is a method that uses simple and practical tools to get better images. You just need to be creative and exercise more to master this technique. At first, use one flash to start. When you start mastering, you can add more items. Identify properties and accessories that can be associated to produce the desired effect. External flash lights in food photography can affect the details, color, and resulting image dimensions. My last advice: Your photos are not good, if you can not raise one's appetite.
