Before eating meal why water was sprinkled around the plate in India?
Sprinkle water around the plate before eating meal is a custom that has been running from earlier time. If any foreigner read the tittle of post, then they feel strange and think does it happen?
We have often seen that our grandfather, grandmother, dad and mom sprinkling water around the plate before eating. There was not only this, In the earlier time people were taking meal after reading MANTRA. But there are very few people who does like this. They do like this to show their respect towards grains.
There were some scientific reason also. In the earlier days almost all the houses were made of soil. People of earlier time were like to take meal on the platform of soil. There were not such facilities of chairs and tables at that time. If ground is dry and someone passes through it, then dust can fly and come in the plate and the food become messy. Whereas if we sprinkle water around the plate, dust does not fly and food is safe. Also due to sprinkling water insects running on ground do not even come.
So there is main reason to sprinkle water around the plate is to protect food from dust, germs and insects.

What an interesting custom! I'm always curious to find out something new about the culture of people around the globe and India has such a rich culture! When I visited India I was very interested in the fact that many people were using their fingers to eat. Even though we were with a local who was helping us dive into the way the locals do and explore the culture inside out, he couldn't explain why people eat like this. This might be another interesting article- I would be more than happy to read it. :) Thank you for the great information!
