Vanilice - The traditional Serbian Little Vanilla Cookies - According to Food 52, one of the best holiday cakes in the world.
There are flavors and fragrances that remind you of childhood. I made this cookie with my mom, and today I'm making Vanilice with my child, because making them is funny - like a game. This cookies is on the table in almost every house in Serbia during the holidays, so it's the right time to write something about it.
It's no coincidence that a popular site for recipes - Food52 a few years ago has decided that Serbian Vanilice are the best cookies in the world. There are many reasons for this - they are very tasty, easy and quick to make, they smell fantastic, they are melting in the mouth and can stand for a long time, they are even more delicious the next day, and of course they are very decorative.
Ingridians:
- 200 grams lard (or butter, but it's softer and tastier if you use lard)
- 5 tablespoons of granulated sugar
- 1 vanilla sugar (7g)
- 1 whole egg
- 1 yolk
- 500 g of flour for all purposes
jam of apricot or plum...
Put the lard, sugar and vanilla sugar in a bowl and mix well until creamy, then add egg and yolk and mix again. Add the flour and mix into a nice dough. If your dough is loose add 2-3 tablespoons of milk.
Place the dough on a work surface dusted with flour, and roll the dough to 0,5 cm thickness (1/4-inch-thick round). Using a small round cookie cutter, cut out the cookies and place them on the cookie sheets.
Then put them in the preheated oven at about 180°C (350° F) - air circulation, for about 10 - 12 minutes, but keep an eye on them and take them out before when they start turning slightly brown.
Take one cookie and spread the jam on it and add another cookie., pressing the two together so they make a sandwich. Dust with confectioners' sugar.
There are different versions of the recipe. Some recipes contain walnuts, some almonds, some lemon juice or lemon bark.
In any case, every cookies is tasty in their own way. You are free to experiment and be creative.
The magic period of the Holidays comes to us, so enjoy!
