Ah! Thanks for this info - my neighbor made kombucha on her counter and I never asked her where she got her start-off scoby before I moved away and lost touch with her. I've always wondered. Now, maybe I'll start my own!
You can definitely purchase a SCOBY (even on Amazon) or find one for free or for sale on Craigslist. But this way of making it from store-bought works just as well!
I think I might be wary of getting one off craigslist. They're sort of sketchy looking anyway. I'd want to know it was WAY reputable.
Hah that's a good call- not sure bacteria is something I want to be buying on Craigslist either!
